Do Food Sensitivity Tests Actually Work? Here's What the Research Says
If you've struggled with bloating, stomach pain, headaches, fatigue, or other unexplained symptoms, you've probably seen ads promising to identify your "food sensitivities" with a simple blood test. Companies market these tests as a quick solution to finally finding the foods causing your symptoms.
But are these tests accurate?
The short answer: Most at-home food sensitivity tests have not been shown to reliably identify foods that cause symptoms. In fact, many allergy and gastroenterology organizations recommend against using them because they can lead to unnecessary food restrictions and confusion.
Allergy, Intolerance, or Sensitivity?
Before we break down why these tests are unreliable, let’s discuss one of the biggest sources of confusion. Food allergies, food intolerances, and food sensitivities are not the same thing.
Food allergy
Immune system reaction (IgE)
Can be life-threatening
Diagnosed with validated allergy testing
Example: Peanut allergy causes immune reaction requiring emergency care
Food intolerance
Difficulty digesting or processing a food
Usually uncomfortable although not dangerous
Diagnosed based on history and sometimes medical testing
Example: Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose and causes digest discomfort but is no dangerous
Food sensitivity
Not a universally accepted medical term
Often used as a marketing term
No validated blood test currently exists
Example: IBS symptoms triggered by onions is a food trigger, but not necessarily a "food sensitivity"
What Are IgG Food Sensitivity Tests?
Most commercially available food sensitivity tests measure IgG antibodies to dozens or even hundreds of foods.
What Is IgG?
IgG (immunoglobulin G) is the most abundant antibody in your bloodstream and is a normal part of your immune system. Antibodies are proteins your immune system produces in response to substances it encounters, including bacteria, viruses, vaccines, and even foods.
Unlike IgE antibodies, which are responsible for immediate allergic reactions such as hives, swelling, wheezing, or anaphylaxis, IgG antibodies are generally associated with normal immune recognition and memory.
In fact, developing IgG antibodies after eating a food is often considered a sign that your immune system has been exposed to that food and recognizes it. Many researchers believe this is a marker of tolerance, meaning your body is familiar with the food, rather than a sign that the food is harmful.
For example, if you regularly eat eggs, yogurt, almonds, wheat, or chicken, it's not surprising that an IgG test may detect antibodies to those foods. That result doesn't necessarily mean those foods are causing bloating, headaches, fatigue, or digestive discomfort.
Why Is This Important?
Imagine you have a close friend you see every week. If someone checked your phone records, they would find frequent contact between the two of you. That doesn't mean your friend is causing your problems, it simply shows you interact often.
IgG antibodies work in a similar way. A positive IgG result may reflect that you've eaten a food regularly, not that it's responsible for your symptoms.
Because of this, many people receive reports showing "high reactivity" to foods they eat frequently and tolerate well, such as milk, eggs, wheat, or oats. Eliminating these foods based solely on IgG results may lead to unnecessary dietary restrictions without improving symptoms.
What Do Professional Organizations Say?
Several major medical organizations recommend against using IgG food sensitivity testing, including The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), and The Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (CSACI). Their concern is that these tests have not been scientifically validated to diagnose food-related symptoms.
Why Can These Tests Cause Problems?
Many people receive pages of foods labeled "high reactivity."
That can lead to:
Cutting out foods unnecessarily
Increased anxiety around eating
More restrictive diets
Difficulty eating socially
Higher grocery costs
Nutrient deficiencies if multiple food groups are eliminated
Delayed diagnosis of the real underlying issue
As a dietitian, I often meet clients who have removed large amounts of food based on test results but continue to experience the same symptoms.
So What's Actually Causing Your Symptoms?
Digestive symptoms can have many different causes, including:
IBS
Celiac disease
Lactose intolerance
Fructose malabsorption
GERD
Inflammatory bowel disease
Medication side effects
Stress and the gut-brain connection
Pelvic floor dysfunction
Constipation
Eating patterns (such as skipping meals or eating very quickly)
This is why identifying the cause is often more helpful than eliminating long lists of foods.
When Is Testing Helpful?
While IgG food sensitivity tests aren't recommended, there are evidence-based tests that may be appropriate depending on your symptoms.
Examples include:
Testing for celiac disease
Validated allergy testing when an IgE-mediated allergy is suspected
Lactose or fructose breath testing in some situations
Hydrogen/methane breath testing when appropriate
Blood work to evaluate nutrient deficiencies or inflammation
The right test depends on your medical history and should be chosen with your healthcare provider.
What Should You Do Instead?
If you suspect food is contributing to your symptoms:
See your primary care provider or gastroenterologist if symptoms are persistent or severe.
Work with a registered dietitian to identify patterns and ensure your diet remains adequate.
Avoid eliminating large numbers of foods unless medically indicated.
Address eating habits, stress, sleep, hydration, and other lifestyle factors that may contribute to symptoms.
It's understandable to want clear answers when you're dealing with uncomfortable digestive symptoms. While food sensitivity tests may promise quick solutions, the current evidence suggests they often create more confusion than clarity.
Instead of relying on unvalidated testing, a thorough evaluation - including your symptoms, medical history, eating patterns, and, when appropriate, evidence-based medical testing - can provide a more reliable path toward feeling better.
